A Long Way Down Review
Not much time for a review today, too much to do on a Monday, so this one will be a quickie. Maybe I can get Lisa for a more detailed one later this week.
A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby takes a wry look at a strange subject: suicide. 4 people from totally different walks of life meet on top of a building on New Year's Eve. Each planned to jump off for their own reasons, and of course, none of them does, otherwise it would be a short book. They end up talking to one another about their problems and all sort of find their way to their own "solutions", for lack of a better word.
This was my first Nick Hornby book, and though I've read some negative critiques of the book, I rather enjoyed it. I actually laughed out loud reading it, and found myself quickly caring about the characters, flawed as each one is. It is a bit morbid, dealing in such dark subject matter, but it never gets too serious. Definitely recommended.
Next up, I'm hoping will be The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I say I'm hoping because it's 600+ pages long, and I'm only at page 80, and it's techinically due back at the library today. I guess if I'm not through at least half of it by the end of the week, I'll probably have to return it and wait my turn again. We shall see. It's very intriguing so far though, so I think I'll stick with it.
Another book in this vein suggested by Shane, is the Rule Of Four. I may get to this one some time in the future.

Not the Hornby book I would have started with, but oh well. If you're looking to read more of his stuff, try High Fidelity and then About a Boy. Both are movies (and good ones at that), but they don't do the book complete justice (isn't that always the case?)
