We

My Rating:
We (Modern Library Classics)

The whole time I was reading We, I felt like I was comparing it to George Orwell's 1984. There are similarities, a futuristic society which dictates all activities, from work to sex, a domineering main figure (Big Brother vs. The Benefactor). 1984 updated We to include technological advances like TV, but they are definitely very similar, all the way down to the protagonists. (I won't spoil the book by comparing their fates though) Bottom line is, I really enjoyed the book, probably even more than I liked 1984, though it's been a while since I read that one. It's easy to see why it was banned in the Soviet Union, with its messages of revolution and subversion, and it was a worthy Banned Book week selection as it earns a coveted five stars.
Next up is a book that was controversial when it came out in Japan, Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. It's supposed to be a sort of updated Lord of the Flies, so it should be interesting.
